This will reduce the bulk at the center of the star, making the piecing easier and neater. Repeat steps 4 to 10 for each of the remaining stitched fabric stacks. Match two of the eight sections carefully. Stitch the edges together. Press the seam open. Trim the dog ears (see the Glossary on p. 168). Repeat steps 12 and 13 to make four sets. Match the edges of two sets. Stitch. Press 15 the seam allowances open. Repeat for the remaining two sets. Match and stitch the two halves of the Frayed Star quilt together.
Make the Quilt Top 2. Using the border fabric and the layout on p. 29 as guides, stitch piece D to the center square of background piece A. Press the seam to one side. Stitch piece C to pieces D and A. Add piece B, and finally piece E. Press as you go. When the quilt top is completed, place it right side up on 2 your pressing surface. Tip To avoid gaps between your appliqué pieces, try making the pieces slightly larger where they overlap. For example, I made Woody’s white head a little larger on the edges where his ears are and then put the ears on top.
