Now what? A If the color of backing fabric is darker than the bobbin thread, you can color it in with Micron pen or Sharpie marker. How to prevent this next time: Do all piecing and stitching with the backing color thread in the bobbin. Q My backing is too short to make self-binding. How do I bind my quilt now? A Trim the batting shorter than the prescribed amount, so the backing has less batting to fold over. Or, trim the backing flush with the batting and add bias binding. How to prevent this next time: Cut the backing larger or measure more accurately when placing the center column.
Follow the Self-Binding section on page 23. Using a 6″ square of the backing/binding fabric as the center block is an excellent design technique, as in the Star Trip below. Purchase 15/8 yards of backing/binding flannel, instead of the usual 13/8 yards, so you will have enough to cut the additional 6″ square for the center. Star Trip QUILT LAYOUT HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN DESIGN 1. Select a 6″ square for the center and place the square on the center of the designing surface. 2. Select a contrasting fabric for the four squares around the center square.
5. Open and place the flannel backing right-side down on a flat surface, smoothing out wrinkles. 6. Layer the batting centered on top of the flannel backing. 7. Carefully lift up one corner of the flannel and stick a long pin through the center marking, straight up from the bottom, through the flannel and the batting. You should see the pin sticking up through the batting. Pin the four corners of batting with regular pins or quilting pins. 8. Line up the center seam of column 1 with the protruding pin.
